Me and Mickey met online completely by chance that he was in the area as he worked away as a diver. We spoke for around 7 weeks before finally arranging a date when he was home. We went out for food, as I’m not the most lady like I was eating slightly uncouth and Mickey decided to ask me if I needed a trough with my meal, to which I just replied yes and carried on scoffing my face. I think then we both knew then we were going to get on fine. Fast forward to 17 months later on our first family holiday Mickey asked my daughters permission to ask me to marry him on our last night in a lovely surrounding. It was incredibly sweet and I obviously said YES!
Nervous yet excited. One of my best friends had recommended YAP to me as Joanne is a close family friend of hers. I had already been to 2 other bridal stores to no avail and right before my appointment at YAP I was at another bridal store so felt slightly deflated.
It was cosy but elegant. An immense family feel as soon as you walked in. The girls were incredibly friendly and helpful and you could tell they knew what they were talking about.
I knew in my head what I wanted in a dress but began to think it didn’t exist after already trying on 10+ dresses! I knew I wanted lace, A-line style and no straps which sounds like it would be incredibly simple to find!
I looked through the racks myself and selected 2-3 dresses I thought looked nice and to my style. I then had a dress chosen for me by Heather going off what features I wanted in a dress. In all honesty that dress didn’t look much at first glance but I knew I’d try anything on just in case as I felt I trusted Heathers expertise.
Heather was my bridal stylist and she was just lovely, Very helpful and honest which is exactly what I wanted. Heather recommended things that I probably wouldn’t have considered and helped me to style my dress with a veil and belt that suited just perfect! Heather made me feel incredibly welcome and part of the YAP family from the get go and it was a lovely feeling.
My dream gown was the last gown I tried on at YAP and the dress Heather had actually picked for me. Before trying it on I felt it was a lost cause but as soon as it was on and I walked out to the larger mirror I felt the biggest lump in my throat! I just knew that was my dress and it felt amazing, I felt amazing in it and I started to cry uncontrollably! It was exactly what I was looking for and even more! I loved how it had the fitted fabric underneath and then the A line lace draped over the top giving a kind of 2 in 1 style and feel. I felt so feminine but not too over the top!
I would recommend Jo and the team to absolutely everyone I come into contact with. There is so much meaning and reason behind YAP which makes it feel so much more special than other bridal boutiques. To add to that they go above and beyond to help and please you and they are all fantastic in what they do! The boutique itself is beautiful and full of sentiment, so elegantly lay out yet cosy and gives a homely feel. Finding a huge part of your love story in a place where love is the basis for everything is so empowering and knowing how much it means to all of the staff there adds that little extra special meaning to your day.
I had beautiful grey satin Jenny Packham open toe heels encrusted with gems/jewels. My veil was a shorter veil but had beautiful sparkle throughout which helped compliment my belt which also added some sparkle to the day!
We had a church service followed by our reception at Beamish Hall. We wanted a day where we could just enjoy ourselves with all of our nearest and dearest there. We laughed from start to finish and I think that’s reflected in the photos as we are both pretty goofy in the sense that we don’t take life too seriously! We wanted photos which were relaxed and captured us all in the moment and also a few of the more formal style photos with our parents and bridal party and groomsmen.
The theme we had was Scottish with Mickey being born in Scotland and sporting a kilt in his family clan Ferguson Tartan. The Bridesmaids were in Navy which suited the time of year and paired lovely with the greens and blues in Mickeys Kilt. Our daughter’s flower girl dress was ivory finished with a satin tie and tartan bow made out of the same fabric that made Mickeys Kilt. In essence that day we were brought together as a family and all had some of the Ferguson tartan on/with us to symbolise that.
On the day of my wedding actually putting my gown on that had been altered to fit me like a dream by Anne over at Diva Designs was an amazing feeling. It fit every inch of my body perfectly and I felt absolutely amazing in it. I couldn’t wait to show it off! I also didn’t want to take it off!
Tell us about your chosen suppliers and how they made your day perfect;
Our amazing florist was Lorna at The design studio – No ordinary floral designer and she was amazing from the start. Lorna created our perfect yet simple flower arrangements. We incorporated blue thistle into the bridal bouquet which added an extra Scottish feel yet it still followed with the colour scheme. My bouquet was also tied with the same fabric used to make Mickeys kilt.
Our photographers were Gem and Chris from GSStudios. They were fantastic and captured out day perfectly. The photos play such a big role as in years to come we can look back at the memories and relive the day.
Our videographer was Marc Trotter from Inspired Wedding Imagery and he was so great just fitting into the background but getting the footage we wanted. Watching our highlight reel was amazing and we feel Marc really outdone himself. The full video was perfect and we relived the whole day again but from a different perspective.
My amazing sister in law Rachel Twist worked endlessly all morning to create all of our hairstyles and I couldn’t have thought of anyone I trusted more with the responsibility. Not having much time to get ready herself she done my bridal, 4 bridesmaids, flower girl and mother of the brides hair all in the nick of time!
Marta from Marta Make Up who is a freelance make-up artist made me and my bridesmaid’s look and feel amazing on the big day! I had a make-up trial with Marta and she was so lovely to talk to and I felt very relaxed. She knew a lot about how to look after skin and really knew what she was talking about, as well as having amazing skills with a make-up brush! Marta came bright and early to transform us and was great!
We used Lovedubcars for our wedding transport which consisted of a VW Camper Van and a bug car! This was perfect to tie in with Mickeys roots again as he was raised the majority of his life in Plymouth. The staff was great and incredibly helpful! Me and Mickey went for a photoshoot in the woods at beamish hall after the ceremony and our driver gave me her boots to wear so I didn’t have to wear my heels in the mud with it having snowed a blizzard all morning!
For our reception room décor we used Beamish Extras who decorated the room brilliantly.
Deluxe extras provided us with some 4ft LED wooden initials for décor in our main reception room and a photo booth for the evening, which was great fun filled with props and even a marry-oke option for everyone to have a sing along to our chosen song – Queen -You’re my best friend!
Anne at Diva designs done the alterations for my dress and she was lovely from start to finish. Anne was really helpful and reassured me the whole time. I took my dress back to Anne after the wedding to be professionally cleaned and boxed to preserve the dress at its finest. Brilliant service and my dress came back looking so fresh – even after being trailed through woods during and after a snow storm!
Thank you girls from the bottom of my heart – you are all fabulous!
Thank you so much to our beautiful Kim for sharing her and Mickey's love story with us! It was an honour to look after you on your 'bridal journey' and are so glad that we were such a big part of your 'love story'
Congratulations and lots of love,
